Fresh out of uniform after World War II, smooth-talking veteran Victor "Vic" Norman (Clark Gable) returns to Manhattan determined to conquer the cutthroat world of Madison Avenue on his own terms. He fast talks his way into a high-paying executive position at a prestigious radio advertising agency managed by the anxious Mr. Kimberly (Adolphe Menjou). However, Vic quickly discovers that his massive salary comes with an even larger headache: Evan Llewellyn Evans (Sydney Greenstreet), the tyrannical, eccentric, and utterly ruthless tycoon behind Beautee Soap. Tasked with orchestrating a high-stakes marketing campaign that satisfies Evans' bizarre whims, Vic is forced to navigate an industry built on bluster, blackmail, and compromise. Along the way, his professional and personal principles are put to the ultimate test as he finds his affections torn between Kay Dorrance (Deborah Kerr), a refined and dignified British war widow, and Jean Ogilvie (Ava Gardner), a sultry, down-to-earth nightclub singer from his past. Gable gives an outstanding performance in this overlooked gem of a film which takes an appropriately cynical look at the advertising business in post-WWII New York.
